The highlight of our vacation in the Cambridge area was, by far, our experiences with Blackwater Paddle and Pedal. My husband and I travelled with our two children, our 10-year old daughter and our 14-year old son. We rented bikes from BPPA, and after our introduction and fitting of the bikes (which were really nice, well-kept Trek bikes), we set out on our way with a map from Susan (the proprieter) and instructions to call her should we need anything. Idiots that we are, we got the handlebars turned around on one of the bikes after a couple of miles or so, and Susan came quickly with a replacement bike, right after we called her. Fortunately, she knew that we merely had to turn the bike’s wheel and then we were off on our way again! Susan was so warm and kind, and did not show any annoyance at all at our ignorance.
The biking was such a wonderful, relaxing experience that we decided to give kayaking a try the next day! We met up with Susan and the kayaks at a local river area. This time we were much smarter. . .we had Susan come out with us as our guide. She pointed out all of the bald eagle nests to us, as well as pointing out the eagles on their majestic perches. Without Susan there, we would have never spotted all of the wildlife. She also taught us about the differences between many of the birds we saw (not that I can remember those details now, but then it was really interesting!) We also learned a little bit more about the region and its history, and did a lot of laughing along the way. It was an awesome experience, and I HIGHLY recommend using Susan of BPPA to guide you.
So, just in case you missed the point of my note. . .it was so nice to share our vacation experiences with Blackwater Paddle and Pedal. It was a pleasure to plan our experiences with Susan, and even better to share them with her!
I just participated in the Terry ride and the 2:00-5:00 guided kayak trip which was excellent. Thank you Susan!!!!!!
I’m returning to Cambridge June 8-11 and would like to go on another guided kayak tour to the same area. Your website mentions trips on the Choptank from Hyatt beach. Saturday was my first kayak trip, and I liked the protected, shallow waters since I’m not a swimmer. I enjoyed it so much I’ld like to do a repeat guided tour in the same location. Would that be possible? Several friends will also be with me in Cambridge June 8-11, but I don’t know how many others would be interested - perhaps 2-3. Will you run trips from that location when I’m in Cambridge? If so, how far in advance do we have to sign up? Any information would be helpful. Thanks,
What a wonderful day we had with Susan and crew on Saturday. They made a wonderful adventure for 25 of us — ranging from 6 months old up to age 85! The cycling was great fun, and the kayaking was absolutely beautiful. We also learned a lot about local history, flora and fauna. Couldn’t have been a nicer day. Thank you!
An absolutely wonderful time kayaking ,the day was perfect! Susan and Jay were the perfect hosts, full of tons of information about BWR and history of Cambridge. We can wait to visit again and take a different tour.
Thanks so much for everything.
Hi. we visited your paddling company/general store on Sunday, March 14. You rushed out of your house and gave my daughter, son, husband and I a wonderful tour of the store and a fantastic history lesson. We’d been driving around learning more about Harriet Tubman. My daughter, Coco, finished her project – see the attached photo We wanted to say thank you again – our time with you was a highlight of our weekend. We hope to make it out to visit you again, go canoeing around the refuge and further explore the area. Thank you for the kindness you showed my kids.
I’ve been kayaking with Susan twice on two different rivers, and both trips have been awesome. Susan took care of all the logistics (getting us to the river and picking us up at the end of the trip). The equipment she provided was tops… the kayak was new, and while very maneuverable, stable. We took Susan along with us on both trips, and I would encourage you to do the same. Susan is a joy to have along…always bubbly and a wealth of information. It will become obvious to you early on that she’s in the right line of business…and therefore very good at what she does. You will hear stories about the area, past and present; and she will quickly point out wildlife, adding information them. I’ve seen egrets, blue herons, eagles, osprey, one snake [yikes!], and an otter…just to name a few. There’s nothing like cruising down a river just relaxing and waiting to spot wildlife…it’s there, one must only be quiet and look. Anyway, I can’t wait to return to paddle yet another river with Susan in tow!
Our vacation in the Cambridge area is a thing of the past but our memory of the peace will last a long time.
