Chased and repoussé pieces in fine silver are most successful when the last process is a hardening one or the design involves a fair amount of deformation of the sheet metal (raised, folded, and creased areas). Hundreds of years ago, it was discovered that adding a small amount of copper to silver created an alloy that retained most of the good qualities of pure silver but also increased its strength.
To get started, dapping punches can be used for repoussé. As you progress you will probably also want real repoussé punches like those shown in the center of this picture.
