Rupp's father settled in Halstead after coming from Austria in 1883 with his mother, two brothers, and two sisters. He worked as a mill hand before taking up farming and became a citizen in 1892. Rupp's mother emigrated from Germany in 1891, accompanied by her father and her youngest brother. Heinrich and Anna married in 1893 and lived on two small farms before claiming a 120-acre homestead seven miles north of Halstead. Six children were born to the union: Otto, Henry, Theodore, Adolph, Elizabeth, and Alfred.
Devastated by football injuries to two-sport players, the Wildcats finished 3-13, still the school's worst record. Hayden was glad to turn the job over to Mauer, who compiled a 40-16 record in three seasons, including a 16-3 mark in 1930. He quit because the university would not give him a pay raise. The school newspaper called Mauer a "Moses" who had led the Wildcats out of the basketball wilderness. His influence spread throughout the South, as other coaches adopted his style. Two university officials who came to the station to greet a candidate for the basketball job was a strong young man standing about 6-foot-2, a little on the portly side, get off the train.
We knew he held a special place in his heart for us. It went beyond winning 23 games in a row before losing to Tennessee at Knoxville.
