Animators Are Unique 27 ASSISTING ON THE SWORD IN THE STONE The talented Retta Davidson is the assistant animator. Milt Kahl Our next animator is also legendary and had a more deliberate style.

Milt Kahl (1909–1987) was more than a leader in Disney's animation department: he was a force. His pencil gave life to Shere Khan in The Jungle Book, Merlin in The Sword in the Stone, Tramp in Lady and the Tramp, and many more. Ward didn't have time to draw the character, and he knew we could do that. He had already given us the timing and rough poses. The rest of the job was left up to us. However, the lines on paper conveyed the heart of the scene, along with Kimball's special energy and vitality that made him such a standout animator. Cleaning up a Ward Kimball scene was a workout, to be sure. But I sure felt good afterward. Of course, there are many more animators I could name, and each had his or her own individual style.
