(b) Electron micrographs of rat medial preoptic area immunostained for LHRH synaptic connections between labeled axons (arrows) and labeled cell bodies (LC). The synaptic membrane specializations (indicated by the small arrowheads) appear to be of the symmetric Gray II type. All of the labeled axons (arrows) contain pleimorphic-clear vesicles and a few dense-core vesicles. Bar scale = 1 ~m. From Leranth et al. (1985), by courtesy of Brain Research.

Positive Feedback During the estrogen-induced LH surge in OVX ewes, we have observed ah increase in GnRH pulse frequency from approximately one pulse per h to two pulses per h (Clarke and Cummins, 1985a). A spectacular example of increased pulse frequency during the onset of the LH surge is seen in Fig. 2. This indicates the hypothalamic component of the positive feedback response. Using 'push-pull' perfusion of the median eminence and sampling OVX-estrogen treated ewes, Schillo et al. (1985) have found variable patterns of GnRH secretion associated with the LH surge.
