The Laws of Simplicity (Simplicity: Design, Technology, Business, Life)

Ultimately, we're studying that simplicity equals sanity. We're rebelling opposed to know-how that's too complex, DVD avid gamers with too many menus, and software program observed through 75-megabyte "read me" manuals. The iPod's fresh gadgetry has made simplicity hip. yet occasionally we discover ourselves stuck up within the simplicity paradox: we need whatever that's easy and simple to take advantage of, but in addition does all of the advanced issues we would ever wish it to do.

The creative design approach includes as well the designer’s synthetic skills and suspicion towards traditional solutions (Lorentz, 1990). ’ This can be achieved by reducing material costs, improving production costs (Ginkel, 1997), using appropriate materials (Goodrich, 1994) and by the standardisation of components (Buijs, 1996). During the creation and production phase the ‘product’s value’ is determined, because these two phases determine the product’s function, form and cost-price. ’ A convincing product needs less sales effort, gives free publicity, motivates the sales-force (gives them self-assurance), and might even motivate others in the company.

In contrast, characteristics such as exploration, stimulation, and ambiguity are crucial to the success of a dialogue such as totemics in facilitating a design process. In terms of actual requirements, the support system needs to enable the potential users (from design, engineering, technical strategy, and marketing) to manage their activities with some reference to the totem map. It needs to stimulate them to enhance, communicate and reflect upon the evolving spatial representation(s) of shared strategic understanding, and integrate this strategic knowledge with existing artefacts, processes, and domain knowledge.

Existing design management courses, especially at postgraduate level, should then define themselves more in terms of the specialist fields of management that determine design processes— creative team management, design procurement management, etc. Has the term ‘design management’ outlived its usefulness? Is it time to bury it? REFERENCES Armstrong, P. , 1996, Art and Accountability: the Languages of Design and Managerial Control.
