Example text

Therefore, a clearly defined corpus is essential for further research, and a strategy for assembling this corpus is necessary so that Manichaean artifacts can be securely distilled from among the large number of Turfan manuscript remains. No concerted attempts have been made by previous scholars to address the problem of forming a Manichaean corpus of art. Most specialists have relied on an undefined sense of the “Manichaeanness” of a given piece of art, and due to the subjectiveness of this standard they have included non-corresponding lists of items in their respective corpuses.

The above claim is based on my analysis of Turfan collections and published facsimiles of East Central Asian manuscripts. Two preliminary rules have crystallized regarding the utilization of codex format and the presence of fully painted illuminations in such a format. Concerning the codex shape of East Central Asian books, the following picture emerges. Buddhist texts written in the Middle Iranian and Turkic languages generally follow pustaka (palm-leaf) or scroll formats. 36 Regarding the use of illumination in codex-formatted books of East Central Asia the following can be noted.

In some cases, fragments may have been found together and thus grouped according to their provenance. In other cases, they appear to have been organized according to similarities in their appearance. Nevertheless, the mere fact that they are framed together does not constitute a claim for the Manichaean origin of all the fragments so grouped. Although the logic of framing is unrecorded, one should not assume a lack of it. Since the framing itself could hold information, a documentation of conditions before the alterations is essential.
