II Concerning this, that is, this competence in compensating for incompetence, I should like to make, at this point, two preliminary remarks, two intermediate remarks, and one concluding remark. I imagine you will have sensed by now that I have construed my subject (which as I said was assigned) in a somewhat peculiar way. What interests me here is not the boundary between the infinitely large domain of philosophy's incompetence and the infinitely small domain of its competence, but instead precisely a nonboundary: the blending of incompetence and competence.

33 Individuum est ineffabile (the individual is ineffable); and for just this reason—because the demand for justification cannot reach the individual's ineffable individuality—human beings as individuals are inaccessible for questions of legitimation, which is precisely why they must become individuals. From the middle of the eighteenth century on, the rapid rise of "individuals" is the rapid rise of their ineffability, as an answer to the hypertrophy of the legitimation-compulsion: as an escape into unindictability.

Tribunalization" is my name for the rising trend in which this total legitimation-compulsion for everyone emerges, around 1750, through the radicalization of theodicy into the philosophy of history. And the fact that this compulsion becomes total and merciless, devoid of grace, I call the overtribunalization of the reality in which humans live. This compulsion—of which the prime example in reality is of course the tribunal mania of the French Revolution—functions for human beings as a threat to and a loss of their life-world, for—and I repeat—it is unendurable, it is unliveable.
