This plane wave segment can be thought of as a wave packet, called a beam or ray, consisting of a superposition of wave vectors very close in direction and magnitude to the central wave vector of the wave packet. Working on this project has increased my own personal credence in the correctness of the Everett approach to quantum mechanics from “pretty high” to “extremely high indeed.” There are still puzzles to be worked out, no doubt, especially around the issues of exactly how and when branching happens, and how branching structures are best defined. (I’m off to a workshop next month to think about precisely these questions.) But these seem like relatively tractable technical challenges to me, rather than looming deal-breakers.

Momentum isn't directly measurable either, but we have no problem accepting that momentum is a "real" thing, so why do we have a problem with the wavefunction? This form of Newton’s second law is actually closer to Newton’s original statement of the law. This is the Most Simple Science Theory of Physical Reality (despite many claims to the contrary, science does actually work, we just needed the correct foundation of continuous Space rather than discrete matter). This is because of a "phase difference" which is pretty easy to understand if you draw it. Erica Carlson’s example of the spinning quarter in the RTB video Quantum Apologetics is a good example of this. Everett argued that this approach was philosophically a mess: it used two contradictory conceptual schemes to describe reality, the quantum one of wave functions and the classical one of us and our apparatus. Think about three phases of this experiment: 1) while the electron is moving toward the wall, quantum physics just says “it might hit anywhere on the wall” so we cannot know where it will hit; 2) a primary event (the physical interaction of electron-hitting-wall, which causes the electron's many location-potentialities to become one location-actuality) leads almost immediately to secondary events involving the detector, typewriter-and-paper, light bulb, poison-releasing device and maybe a poisoned cat; at this time you hear the typewriter and see the light, so you know that the electron hit the wall and has been detected; 3) two weeks later, when you see either cat or paper or movie, you know the cat's fate, paper's result, movie's results, and electron-hitting location.
